A 70-year-old woman remained in critical condition after being shot while waiting for a bus in the Azalea Park area.
ORLANDO, FL — Orange County deputies searched Monday for the person who shot a 70-year-old woman while she waited at a bus stop in the Azalea Park area, then surrounded a nearby home before saying the suspect was not inside.
The shooting drew a large law enforcement response to a residential section east of Orlando and left investigators with few public answers by Monday night. The woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Deputies had not released her name, a suspect description or a possible motive.
Deputies responded shortly after 9 a.m. Monday to the 1000 block of Egan Drive, near Hager Way, after reports that a woman had been shot at a bus stop. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said the woman was waiting for the bus when an unknown person shot her. Hours later, deputies focused on a house near Flanders Way and Faber Drive, a few blocks from the shooting scene. SWAT members surrounded the home while investigators worked to determine whether the shooter was there. The sheriff’s office later said the scene had been cleared and the suspect was not inside.
The shooting happened in broad daylight in Azalea Park, a neighborhood of homes, small roads and bus stops near busy east Orange County corridors. At the bus stop scene, evidence markers and visible damage showed where investigators were working. FOX 35 reported that sunglasses, bloodstains and bullet holes were visible at the location. Officials did not say how many shots were fired, whether the woman was targeted or whether anyone else was near the stop when the gunfire began. Deputies also did not say whether they had recovered a weapon.
Neighbors described the shooting as jarring for a neighborhood where people are used to seeing residents walk, wait for buses and move through the area during the morning. Jill Bowles, who said she has lived in the neighborhood since 1984, said the violence was painful to see. “This hurts. This is very sad,” Bowles said. No other injuries were reported in the first public accounts of the shooting, and officials did not identify any witnesses by name.
The sheriff’s office treated the case as an active investigation through Monday evening. Deputies said the shooter remained at large after SWAT cleared the nearby residence. No arrest had been announced. Investigators were expected to continue reviewing the scene on Egan Drive, the nearby home that drew the SWAT response and any evidence that could connect the shooting to a suspect. Officials did not announce a news conference, a reward or a timeline for releasing more information.
The woman remained hospitalized in critical condition Monday night, and the search for the shooter continued. The next major update is expected when the Orange County Sheriff’s Office identifies a suspect, announces an arrest or releases more details about the woman’s condition.
