Deputies shoot machete-wielding man

THOUSAND OAKS, CA – Authorities in Ventura County are investigating a recent incident at the Ventu Park Shopping Center where deputies shot a man reportedly threatening individuals with a machete. The confrontation took place shortly before 6:30 a.m. on October 24 after the sheriff’s department received reports of a man brandishing a machete and behaving erratically.

When deputies arrived, they attempted to subdue the suspect using a Taser, but it proved ineffective. The man then fled into a business within the shopping center, where he allegedly threatened employees. At this point, deputies resorted to using their firearms, striking the man.

Deputies administered first aid at the scene until paramedics arrived. The man was quickly brought to a local hospital for treatment. He is currently in critical condition, according to a sheriff’s office statement.

Further investigations revealed that the same suspect was likely involved in a series of violent and destructive acts earlier that morning. The incidents reportedly began at the Palm Garden Hotel, where the suspect is accused of using a machete to smash a window. Following this act, he allegedly proceeded to a nearby 76 Gas Station, assaulting another individual before stealing their car.

The man is believed to have driven the stolen vehicle to the shopping center, where he confronted another person and used the machete to vandalize this individual’s car. His identity remains undisclosed as the investigation continues.

The sheriff’s department intends to release body camera footage of the shooting within the next 45 days.
