SMYTH COUNTY, VA – One deputy was killed and another injured in a shooting incident in Smyth County, Virginia, on Friday evening. The deceased was identified as Deputy Hunter Reedy, 27, and the injured officer was identified as Deputy Michael Fedorchuk.
According to Smyth County Commonwealth’s Attorney Phillip Blevins, multiple charges have been filed against Timothy Wayne Goodman, 65, of North Carolina. He is being charged with one count of aggravated murder and four counts of attempted aggravated murder. Additionally, he has been charged with using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The incident unfolded when a Marion police officer attempted to pull Goodman over for a traffic violation. Goodman then drove about a mile and a half into the county, which led Smyth County Sheriff’s deputies to get involved. When the suspect eventually stopped, he allegedly became combative, leading to a deputy approaching him and being shot. A gunfight ensued afterward.
Marion Police Chief John Clair called this an unusual incident for the region, noting that Goodman was from outside the area.
Sheriff Chip Shuler praised Deputy Reedy as an “absolute hero.” Reedy, a husband and father of three, had been serving in law enforcement for seven years. Goodman, who was also injured in the shoot-out, is currently in the hospital.
