Dirt Bike Rider Charged After Police Officer Assaulted

Police said the officer suffered minor injuries as three people intervened during an attempted arrest on Carew Street.

SPRINGFIELD, MA — A 28-year-old Springfield man was arrested after allegedly driving a dirt bike at a police officer, punching the officer and striking him with a motorcycle helmet during a confrontation Thursday evening, police said.

Chamil Guadarrama Jr. faces several charges, including assault and battery on a police officer and two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Springfield police said the incident began Oct. 8 on the 1300 block of Carew Street, where an officer was working an extra detail during an event being held by a local restaurant and radio station.

Police said the officer saw several dirt bikes, scooters and motorcycles committing traffic violations in the area. At about 6 p.m., Guadarrama allegedly came close to striking a pedestrian while riding a dirt bike. The officer then attempted to arrest him, but police said Guadarrama refused to turn off the bike or get off it.

According to police, Guadarrama then allegedly drove the dirt bike toward the officer while the officer held onto the handlebars. Guadarrama fell from the bike, and the officer used pepper spray. Police said two other people, who had not been identified as of Friday, then became involved in the confrontation.

One of those people took the dirt bike and fled, police said. The other allegedly pushed the officer and tried to choke him. Police said Guadarrama then punched the officer. During the struggle, police used a Taser on the unidentified person accused of trying to choke the officer, but authorities said that person continued resisting.

Police alleged that Guadarrama also struck the officer with a motorcycle helmet before additional officers arrived. The unidentified person fled in a vehicle that police later found unoccupied on the 1200 block of St. James Avenue. The officer suffered minor injuries, according to the department.

Guadarrama was arrested at about 6:25 p.m. Police said he was charged with reckless operation of a motor vehicle, unlicensed operation, operating an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle, operating an off-highway vehicle on a public way, unnecessary off-highway vehicle noise and resisting arrest. He also faces the assault and battery charges stemming from the confrontation with the officer.

Guadarrama pleaded not guilty during a court appearance Friday, according to Western Mass News. He was ordered held pending a dangerousness hearing expected the following week. The charges are allegations, and Guadarrama has not been convicted in connection with the incident.

The confrontation comes as Springfield police continue enforcement efforts aimed at illegal dirt bikes and other off-highway vehicles. Earlier in the week, the department reported seizing a dirt bike, quad, motorcycle and scooter during anti-OHV details. Police said in August that officers had already seized more than 100 illegal off-highway vehicles and unregistered motorcycles during 2026.

Police had not announced arrests of the two other people accused of intervening in the Carew Street confrontation as of the latest available reports. The investigation into their identities remained ongoing, and Guadarrama’s case was awaiting further court proceedings.
