Drive-up shooting kills man, injures another in South L.A.

Police say multiple attackers got out of a car and fired at two men on Hobart Boulevard.

LOS ANGELES, CA — One man was killed and another was wounded when a car pulled up and several people got out and opened fire Sunday night in South Los Angeles, authorities said. The shooting was reported around 8:15 p.m. in the 2200 block of South Hobart Boulevard.

Police and homicide detectives were working overnight to determine who carried out the attack and why. The victims, who were standing outside a residential building when the car approached, were hit by gunfire at close range, according to police. One man was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck in the head. The second man was taken to a hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the body. Investigators said the suspects fled in the same vehicle, and no arrests were announced as of early Monday.

Detectives outlined a preliminary timeline based on 911 calls and witness statements. A vehicle traveling south on Hobart Boulevard slowed in front of the address, then stopped. Several people got out and fired multiple rounds before getting back in and driving away, investigators said. Los Angeles Police Department Robbery-Homicide Division personnel were called to lead the case. “This is going to be a lengthy investigation since they have to interview any witness and try to locate any surveillance footage,” LAPD Capt. Letisia Ruiz said at the scene. Officers blocked off the street as crime scene technicians placed evidence markers and searched for shell casings under parked cars and near entryways.

Officials said they were still working to identify the slain man and notify next of kin. The wounded man’s name was also being withheld. Police did not release a suspect description, the make or color of the vehicle, or a potential motive. Detectives said they would canvass nearby homes and businesses for doorbell and security video that might show the car arriving or leaving and would compare that footage to license-plate readers covering nearby corridors. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner was expected to conduct an autopsy to confirm cause of death and gather ballistic and wound evidence.

Hobart Boulevard runs through densely populated neighborhoods where residential buildings sit close to the curb and nighttime foot traffic is common. The block where the shooting occurred includes multiunit housing set behind narrow parkways and short stairwells, conditions that can complicate lighting and camera angles for investigators. Detectives said they would analyze trajectories from recovered casings and bullet strikes on walls and railings to estimate shooter positions and the number of weapons used. Patrol officers also checked nearby alleys and surface lots for a possible dump site where the attackers might have discarded clothing or a firearm.

Police said standard procedures were underway, including a search for additional witnesses, a review of recent calls for service on the block, and an examination of any prior disturbances involving the address. Robbery-Homicide was expected to brief division leadership on early findings and coordinate with the department’s gang and narcotics units if evidence points that way. If a suspect vehicle is identified, detectives could issue a countywide bulletin and request help from allied agencies and the California Highway Patrol. Any potential court filings would come after arrests and review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Neighbors described a heavy police presence Sunday night, with squad cars sealing off the intersection and officers moving residents behind yellow tape. Several people who said they live on the block reported hearing a burst of shots and ducking inside. “It was fast—like a few seconds—then the car was gone,” said a resident who declined to give a full name. Others watched as paramedics worked on one victim at the curb while another was loaded into an ambulance.

As of Monday morning, police had not announced any arrests or released the victims’ names. Detectives planned to return to the area to re-interview witnesses in daylight and check additional cameras along South Hobart Boulevard. An update from investigators is expected later today.
