Driver charged after DUI crash kills 16-year-old girl

QUEENS, NY – In a tragic incident early Monday morning, a 16-year-old girl lost her life after being struck by a car in Elmhurst. The driver, reportedly intoxicated, also injured the girl’s mother, leaving the community in shock.

Authorities have identified the driver as Edwin Cruz Gomez, 38, from Uniondale, Long Island. He is accused of driving a gray Chevy Suburban into the teenager, Johani Gomez Alvarez, following an argument. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. near Benham Street and Roosevelt Avenue.

Police reports indicate that Gomez, in a fit of rage, reversed his vehicle, mounted the curb, and intentionally hit the young girl. Her mother, 32, who remains unnamed, was also injured in the crash and is currently recovering at Elmhurst Hospital. She is listed in stable condition but is understandably overwhelmed by grief.

Witnesses recall the chaos of the early morning crash, describing sounds that resembled an explosion followed by screams. “It was terrifying,” one neighbor recounted. “Everyone was asleep, and then there was just chaos.”

After the initial impact, Gomez reportedly collided with another vehicle before fleeing the scene. He was later apprehended and now faces multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, driving while intoxicated, and leaving the scene of an accident.

Residents in the area are calling for increased police presence to prevent such tragedies. “We need more police around here,” a local resident expressed, reflecting the community’s fear and frustration.

The incident has left a deep scar on the community, as neighbors and friends struggle to come to terms with the loss. The tragic event underscores the dangers of driving under the influence and the devastating impact it can have on families and communities.

As the legal proceedings begin, the community is left grappling with the senselessness of the tragedy and the need for justice for Johani and her family.
