Authorities have identified the driver as Edwin Cruz Gomez, 38, from Uniondale, Long Island. He is accused of driving a gray Chevy Suburban into the teenager, Johani Gomez Alvarez, following an argument. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. near Benham Street and Roosevelt Avenue.
Police reports indicate that Gomez, in a fit of rage, reversed his vehicle, mounted the curb, and intentionally hit the young girl. Her mother, 32, who remains unnamed, was also injured in the crash and is currently recovering at Elmhurst Hospital. She is listed in stable condition but is understandably overwhelmed by grief.
