Drunk driver hits and kills 2-year-old boy riding tricycle

TAVARES, FL – A heart-breaking incident took place in Tavares, Florida, when a 2-year-old boy was hit and killed by a 19-year-old drunk driver. The boy, who was on his tricycle, was fatally struck by Joshua Montero in the Oak Bend residential area around 7 in the evening. Montero is currently facing charges for DUI manslaughter.

Law enforcement reports suggest that Montero was speeding in his truck at the time of the incident. When police reached the scene, Montero exhibited clear indicators of alcohol consumption. There was a noticeable smell of alcohol on him, and he reportedly had red and glassy eyes. Later, he was found to have alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit for underage drinkers.

Further evidence of Montero’s intoxicated state were observed through what police described as his ‘scattered’ priorities. Det. Courtney Sullivan explained how Montero appeared more concerned about retrieving his phone from his vehicle than the ongoing CPR efforts to save the child’s life.

The Oak Bend community is rallying around the grieving family, providing funds and emotional support through a GoFundMe page.

The family also received support from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Central Florida. Montero has been held in custody with no bond.
