Earlier this month, a somber incident rocked the Heritage Place Living Center in Statesville, Iredell County. A resident of the assisted living facility now faces severe charges following what investigators describe as a deadly assault on his roommate.
The alarming episode unraveled on the evening of June 2nd. The local law enforcement, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, received a distress call from the facility staff just before 9 p.m. The employees had discovered an injured resident, allegedly assaulted by his roommate.
Upon arrival, deputies found 69-year-old Mark Gray Leggette in a grave condition. The senior citizen had sustained multiple injuries, including a severe blow to the head from a blunt object. Despite his injuries, Leggette remained conscious and was quickly rushed by ambulance to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for immediate treatment.
In the meantime, authorities took Leggette’s roommate, 61-year-old Greggory Gerald Warner, into custody without delay. Investigators gathered statements from multiple witnesses present during the incident, and detectives also interviewed Warner. Initially, Warner was charged with assault inflicting serious injury and held on a $20,000 bond.
Tragically, a few days after the incident, Leggette succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. On learning about his death, the deputies quickly sought and secured a warrant against Warner for first-degree murder. The new charges were served to Warner while he was already in jail.
As the legal process unfolds, Warner is currently held without bond in the Iredell County jail.
