Family seeks answers after father killed in SUV

Houston police have not announced an arrest, suspect description or motive in the fatal northeast Houston shooting.

HOUSTON, TX — A Houston family is asking for answers after Floyd Washington was shot and killed while sitting in an SUV near Laura Koppe Road and Bertwood Street in northeast Houston, police and relatives said.

Washington’s death has left relatives grieving and waiting for basic answers in a case that remained open Monday. Houston police said investigators are still searching for the person who shot him. Authorities have not released a suspect description, a vehicle description, a motive or any announcement of an arrest.

The shooting happened near the intersection of Laura Koppe Road and Bertwood Street, an area of northeast Houston where investigators said Washington was inside an SUV when he was shot. Police have released few public details about what led up to the gunfire. Family members later gathered for a balloon release in Washington’s honor, turning the street-side memorial into both a remembrance and a plea for information. His daughter, Niveah Washington, said her father was deeply loved. “My father was a great man,” she said. “He was a very family man, and he loved his kids. He loved everybody.”

Relatives identified the victim as Floyd Washington and described him as a father and family man. They said the lack of answers has added to their pain as they wait for investigators to identify who was involved. Washington’s sister, Birtha Washington, said the family believes someone has information that could help police. “I do know that someone knows something or someone saw something,” she said. “Even if they have some hearsay, reach out.” Police have not said whether detectives believe the shooting was targeted, random or tied to any earlier dispute.

The investigation is centered on a busy northeast Houston corridor where homes, businesses and neighborhood streets sit near major roads. The public details released so far show a narrow timeline: Washington was in an SUV near Laura Koppe Road and Bertwood Street, shots were fired, and police later began searching for the person responsible. Officials have not said whether surveillance video was recovered from nearby properties, whether witnesses have been interviewed or whether any evidence was found inside or around the SUV. The absence of those details has left Washington’s family focused on what they say they know: he was killed, and no one has been publicly named as a suspect.

Houston police are treating the case as an active homicide investigation. Detectives are expected to keep reviewing evidence, checking for witnesses and looking for any video that may show the shooter or a vehicle connected to the case. As of Monday, police had not announced charges. No court dates or hearings have been set because no suspect has been publicly identified. Investigators also have not released whether they are looking for one person or more than one person in connection with the shooting.

At the balloon release, Washington’s relatives stood together to mark his life while calling attention to the unanswered questions surrounding his death. The gathering gave family members a place to speak about him as a father, a loved one and a man they say mattered to many people. Their comments also showed the strain of waiting for information in a case where police have not released a motive or suspect description. The family’s message was simple: someone may know what happened, and that information could move the case forward.

The case remained unsolved Monday. Houston police continued to seek information in Washington’s killing while his family waited for the next public update from investigators.
