Katie Garcia remained hospitalized for four weeks as police continued investigating the unexplained circumstances surrounding her severe injuries.
KANSAS CITY, MO — The family of a 42-year-old Kansas City woman is demanding answers after she was found unconscious, bleeding and partly undressed outside her home in late July, leaving her critically injured and hospitalized for four weeks as police investigate what happened.
Katie Garcia was discovered in the side yard of her home near 28th Street and Prospect Avenue on the morning of July 30, according to an account her relatives and friends provided to FOX4. Her family said doctors performed multiple surgeries after she was taken to a hospital. Four weeks later, relatives said medical intervention had been stopped at their request because of the severity of her condition. Kansas City police told the station that the investigation remains open and detectives have been in regular contact with Garcia’s family.
Garcia, who worked as a massage therapist, had returned home from work on July 29, according to her friends. They said she and her husband went to bed and said goodnight. The family said records from the home’s ADT security system showed the back door opening at 12:11 a.m. What happened after the door opened has not been established publicly.
Friends told the station that Garcia’s husband woke later that morning and could not find her inside the house. After searching the home, he went outside and found her unconscious in the side yard, they said. Garcia was seriously injured and was not wearing pants or underwear. Her husband called 911, according to the family’s account. Authorities have not publicly released a detailed chronology explaining how Garcia came to be outside or how she suffered her injuries.
Garcia’s relatives and friends also said hospital testing showed a blood alcohol concentration of .400 when she arrived for treatment. The family has questioned how and when her blood alcohol level became so high and whether it played a role in the events that left her critically injured. Police have not publicly announced a conclusion about the significance of the test result, and the available reporting does not establish how much alcohol Garcia consumed or over what period.
The circumstances in which Garcia was found also led her relatives to question whether she could have been sexually assaulted. The family told FOX4 that they had sought a sexual-assault examination but were told Garcia could not consent because she was unconscious and that additional legal authorization would be needed. No sexual assault has been confirmed, and authorities have not publicly identified evidence establishing that one occurred.
FOX4 attempted to question Garcia’s husband at the couple’s home. The station described him as the last person known to have seen Garcia before she was found injured. He did not answer the reporter’s questions and went inside the house. There has been no public announcement that he is suspected of a crime, and police have not publicly identified a suspect or announced criminal charges in connection with Garcia’s injuries.
Some relatives and friends said they had believed the investigation was no longer active, a characterization Kansas City police disputed. Police told FOX4 that detectives were continuing to investigate and remained in regular communication with Garcia’s family. Jennifer Trimble, Garcia’s sister, said relatives believe more should be done to determine how Garcia ended up severely injured outside her home.
Garcia’s childhood friends described her as outgoing and devoted to people close to her. Nicole Bandera, one of those friends, said the information the family initially received did not appear to match what they later learned about Garcia’s condition. Another friend, Katherine McCleery, said the unexplained period after the back door opened remains central to the family’s questions.
As of Aug. 28, police had not publicly announced what caused Garcia’s injuries, whether another person was involved or what happened between the recorded opening of the back door and the discovery of Garcia the next morning. The investigation remains ongoing, according to Kansas City police, while Garcia’s family continues seeking an explanation for the events that left her critically injured.
