FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – A tragic incident unfolded in Hollywood when a father of seven lost his life in a devastating car crash. The accused driver, facing serious charges, remains in custody.
Douglas Freeman, a Navy veteran and beloved community member, was killed instantly when his car was engulfed in flames. The accident occurred on Mother’s Day, a day that turned from celebration to tragedy for his family.
Authorities have charged 19-year-old Gerson Aulet Jr. with causing the fatal collision. Witnesses reported seeing Aulet’s vehicle speeding down Sheridan Street at nearly 100 mph before losing control and crashing into Freeman’s car, resulting in the fiery wreck.
The crash left Freeman’s vehicle completely charred at the intersection of 40th Avenue, with only the metal frame remaining. Investigators worked meticulously to clear the scene, which also saw a nearby tree knocked down by the impact.
Freeman was a family man, described by friends as caring and devoted. His passing has left a significant void for his children and loved ones. He had been returning home after taking his girlfriend out for Mother’s Day when the fatal accident occurred.
A judge has since revoked Aulet’s driving privileges and set his bond at $85,000. If released, Aulet will be required to wear an ankle monitor and remain within Broward County.
The community mourns Freeman’s loss, remembering him as a son, brother, and friend to many. The case continues to unfold as legal proceedings advance, with a focus on ensuring justice for Freeman and his family.
