The Sunday afternoon collision involved Los Angeles Fire Department equipment and civilian vehicles along Figueroa Street in Vermont Vista.
LOS ANGELES, CA — Seven people, including a Los Angeles Fire Department member, were taken to hospitals Sunday after a multi-vehicle crash involving an LAFD apparatus in the Vermont Vista neighborhood of South Los Angeles, authorities said.
The collision was reported at about 2:30 p.m. Sept. 13 in the 11900 block of South Figueroa Street, near the 105 and 110 freeways. The Fire Department said seven patients were identified at the scene, including one LAFD member. One person had to be extricated from a vehicle before being evaluated and transported for medical care.
The department’s initial incident alert said an LAFD fire truck and engine were involved in the traffic accident. News reports from the scene described a ladder truck and three civilian vehicles as involved. Video showed the large fire apparatus stopped near several damaged sedans along Figueroa Street.
All seven injured people were evaluated and transported to local hospitals, according to the Fire Department. Authorities had not released their names or detailed medical conditions as of early Monday. The department did not immediately identify which of the injured patients required extrication.
LAFD Capt. Anthony Tubbs told ABC7 that the fire crew had been responding to an emergency when the collision occurred. He said the crash caused significant damage to department equipment and civilian vehicles and resulted in seven people needing hospital transportation.
The Los Angeles Department of Transportation was requested to assist with traffic control after the crash. Fire officials advised people to avoid the area because of expected delays while emergency crews, investigators and damaged vehicles remained along Figueroa Street.
The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating what caused the collision. Authorities had not announced whether speed, right of way, mechanical problems or any other factor contributed to the crash, and no citations or arrests had been reported in connection with the incident.
The collision came four days after another LAFD vehicle was involved in a crash in Boyle Heights. In that Sept. 9 incident, an ambulance transporting a patient collided with another vehicle, leaving three department personnel and another person with minor injuries, according to authorities.
No additional information about Sunday’s crash investigation or the conditions of the seven injured people had been released by early Monday. LAPD is handling the traffic investigation, while the Fire Department has said no further incident updates were available.
