Police arrested a suspect after five people were stabbed at several East Oakland locations within about 30 minutes Monday night.
OAKLAND, CA — One person was killed and four others were injured in a series of stabbings across East Oakland on Monday night, police said, before officers arrested a suspect near one of the final crime scenes.
The attacks unfolded between shortly before 7:30 p.m. and about 8 p.m. on Aug. 24, according to Oakland police and multiple local reports. The victims were found at several locations near 38th and 39th avenues, including Cesar Chavez Park, San Leandro Street, the Fruitvale BART station and International Boulevard. Two surviving victims were listed in critical condition and two were in stable condition.
Officers were first sent to Cesar Chavez Park in the 1800 block of 38th Avenue after receiving an initial report of a possible shooting. When officers arrived, they determined that a person had been stabbed and provided emergency aid, police said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities had not publicly identified the person as of Tuesday.
Police then located a second stabbing victim near 38th Avenue and San Leandro Street. While officers were handling that scene, BART police reported that another person who had been stabbed had been found near the Fruitvale station, according to authorities.
Two additional victims were later found near 39th Avenue and International Boulevard, bringing the total number of people stabbed to five. The four surviving victims were taken for medical treatment. Police said two were in critical condition and two were stable. Officials had not released their names or additional details about their injuries.
Just before 8 p.m., residents directed officers toward the 1500 block of 39th Avenue, where police located a suspect and took the person into custody. Authorities also reported recovering a weapon during the investigation. The suspect’s identity had not been released as of Tuesday.
Investigators had not announced a motive or explained whether the suspect knew any of the victims. Police were also working to determine the circumstances surrounding each stabbing and the precise connection between the separate scenes. Authorities have not publicly detailed what happened immediately before the violence began.
The Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section is investigating the fatal stabbing and the related attacks. Detectives continued gathering evidence and seeking information, photographs and video connected to the incidents. No additional arrests had been announced, and the identity of the person killed remained pending public release.
