DETROIT, MI – A shocking incident occurring on Saturday left a 5-year-old boy dead from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound. The tragedy unfolded in a home where the child and his four siblings, all aged nine or younger, were left unattended.
At approximately 1:25 p.m., on the 16500 block of Greenfield Road, the 5-year-old got his hands on a handgun that was left unattended on a dresser. Detroit Police Chief James White reported that the child was “playing with the weapon, jumping up and down on the bed” when he accidentally shot himself in the face.
The deserted child was pronounced dead at the scene. One parent was reportedly working on a car in the vicinity while the other was out visiting friends. Authorities have taken both parents into custody and are preparing charges accordingly. Child Protective Services were called to the scene and are now caring for the remaining children.
“Absolutely ridiculous, irresponsible, stupid and unnecessary. I’m sick and tired of it,” an exasperated Chief White remarked. Years of similar incidents involving unsupervised children accessing unsecured guns have led to repeated pleas from authorities for responsible gun storage.
Gun-owning neighbors shared their dismay about the tragic event. Troy Gainey, a local resident, urged fellow gun owners to be aware of their responsibilities and to make sure their guns are safely stored.
