Former Laker fires at home intruders

No injuries were reported after the daytime attempt at a Sherman Oaks home, according to Los Angeles police.

LOS ANGELES — Former Los Angeles Lakers forward Christian Wood fired multiple shots as three men tried to enter a home in Sherman Oaks on Wednesday afternoon, police said. The incident was reported around 1 p.m. on the 14800 block of Otsego Street, and the suspects ran off before officers arrived.

Police identify Wood as the resident present during the attempted home invasion and say he reacted when he heard a crash at the rear of the property. The episode, which unfolded on a quiet residential block just west of Sepulveda Boulevard, remains under investigation. Detectives are reviewing evidence collected at the scene and canvassing the neighborhood for cameras and witnesses as they try to track three suspects who fled in daylight. No arrests had been announced as of Friday morning, and authorities said no property was taken and no injuries were reported.

Police said the person inside the house heard a crashing sound near a back entrance and saw three men trying to come in. Wood fired three shots, prompting the intruders to retreat and leave the area, according to law enforcement. Officers responding to 911 calls found no victims at the location and began processing the yard and rear entry for shell casings, pry marks and other physical evidence. “No injuries were reported,” the Los Angeles Police Department said. A marked patrol car remained on the block for several hours while detectives knocked on doors and asked neighbors about any security footage showing the men approaching or the vehicle they used to get away.

Investigators said the men forced or attempted to force entry through the back door before they were confronted by gunfire from inside. They described the suspects only as male and said they were last seen heading down Otsego Street toward Sepulveda Boulevard in a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee. The house where the incident occurred is in a neighborhood of single-family homes with alley access and detached garages, which police say can provide cover for quick entries and exits. Detectives are checking whether other daytime burglary or robbery attempts in the area share features with Wednesday’s break-in, including the point of entry and the direction of flight. Whether any suspect was hit by gunfire remains unknown.

Wood, 30, spent parts of two seasons with the Lakers and has played for several NBA teams since entering the league in 2015. Police said he had been staying at the Sherman Oaks property this week and did not report any items stolen after the confrontation. Officers documented the scene and interviewed occupants and nearby residents before clearing the location in the late afternoon. While police did not release security video, they said they are seeking any digital evidence that might capture the suspects’ approach, the attempted entry at the rear of the home, or the vehicle as it left the block shortly after 1 p.m.

In the hours after the incident, LAPD personnel were seen searching the front yard and side passageways for trace evidence. Neighbors described a steady stream of patrol units along Otsego Street as detectives moved between houses and checked for cameras under porch eaves and on garage fascias. One resident who declined to give a name said officers asked about recent door-to-door canvassing and unfamiliar vehicles on the street earlier in the day. Another neighbor said they did not hear the initial crash but noticed police arriving and setting up yellow tape around the driveway while technicians photographed the rear entry.

Detectives said they are still determining whether the Sherman Oaks attempt fits into any broader pattern of daytime break-ins. They have not announced any suspects by name and have not specified how the men reached the backyard or whether any tool marks were found on the door. The case remains classified as an attempted home invasion and assault with a firearm is among the potential charges under review, pending identification of the people involved. Any charging decisions would be made after detectives complete interviews, finish evidence testing and forward the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Police said they would continue neighborhood canvassing and evidence collection through the weekend and would release updates if they identify the suspects or recover the vehicle believed to be used in the escape. As of Friday, investigators had not disclosed a timeline for the next briefing. The case remains open, with the next expected milestone being confirmation of any recovered video or forensic results from shell casings and door hardware.
