RUSKIN, FL – A community in Ruskin is demanding action after a tragic car crash claimed four lives, reigniting concerns about road safety in the area. The accident occurred when a vehicle veered off the road, struck a home, and ended up in a neighbor’s yard, leaving residents in shock.
Surveillance footage from the incident underscores the severity of the crash, which occurred around 8:15 p.m. on Sunday. The video, which neighbors shared, shows the car speeding along West Shell Point Road near 302nd Street Northwest before it loses control and crashes. The footage is so graphic that parts of it have been blurred for public viewing.
Mark Larson, a local resident, recounted the harrowing event. “The car came through where you see the caution tape, hit a tree, then a house, and continued tumbling,” he described, noting that it finally came to rest after hitting a light post. Fortunately, no one was outside at the time, which may have prevented further casualties.
The road in question has long been a source of concern for residents, who say it is notorious for speeding and accidents. “This road has been a problem spot for years,” Larson stated. “We’ve experienced a lot in this community, and despite our repeated appeals to the county, we’ve been denied the necessary safety measures.”
Larson shared an email from earlier this year, in which county officials responded to his request for a speed study. The study concluded there was no significant speeding issue, and further investigation was deemed unnecessary. However, residents argue that the recent tragedy highlights the need for immediate action.
Neighbors are calling for the installation of safety measures such as a three-way stop, rumble strips, and clearer signage indicating the road’s curve and upcoming stops. They hope these changes will prevent future accidents and save lives.
