Gas station explosion leaves four injured

BELLINGHAM, MA – An explosion at a South Main Street gas station in Bellingham resulted in four people being injured on Friday night. Swiftly following a distress call received shortly before 6:10 p.m., first responders arrived to find four individuals suffering from burn injuries caused by the explosion.

As explained by Bellingham Fire Chief William Miller, those who were affected by the incident were employees attached to the company that was managing work on the gas station. The fire chief indicated that a vapor flash fire, programmed from fumes within an onsite manhole, was the likely trigger for the dangerous explosion. According to reports, the incident did not involve other hazardous substances.

Transportation to the Providence Hospital Burn Center was arranged for two critically injured patients who were impacted by the flames.

These injuries, while critical, do not pose an immediate threat to their lives. For medical evaluation purposes, the remaining two patients were also dispatched to the same burn center.

The investigative units from the Bellingham police and fire departments, the state Fire Marshal’s Office, and code compliance officials all joined forces at the scene of the explosion in response to the startling incident.
