GREENSBORO, N.C. – Tyrek Burton, 37, was tragically shot and killed outside his wedding reception at Barber Park Events Center in Greensboro. The incident occurred Saturday evening, prompting an immediate response from the Greensboro Police Department.
Upon arrival shortly after 8:49 p.m., officers discovered Burton lying in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite emergency medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to family accounts, Burton had briefly stepped out of the venue and was followed by a man. This individual accused Burton of cutting him off at a traffic stop earlier. Witnesses reported that the confrontation escalated as the suspect demanded to know who had passed him at a nearby stop sign. Burton attempted to de-escalate the situation by apologizing, explaining he might not have recognized the incident. Shortly after, the shooter opened fire.
Brittany Burton, Tyrek’s sister, expressed the randomness of the attack, noting that her brother had no prior connection to his assailant. “This was a complete random stranger, and he shot him in cold blood,” she said, noting the devastation this has brought upon the family.
The joyous occasion rapidly turned tragic as Burton was killed in front of his newlywed wife. His family is grappling with the immense grief of losing him on what should have been a celebration of love and unity.
