High school basketball coach assaulted by players after benching them during game

WILLIS, TX – A high school basketball coach in Texas was assaulted after a game by a student-athlete he had previously benched. The incident occurred at around 9:52 p.m. on December 5 at Willis High School, according to a statement that was issued by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

The Coach, representing Willis Independent School District, was allegedly confronted by several individuals, including a student whom he had benched earlier in the evening for “unsportsmanlike conduct” towards an opponent during a match against Conroe High School.

According to the coach, when he returned to the high school after the match, he was confronted in the parking lot by the disgruntled student and his family. The verbal confrontation escalated into physical violence when the student and his brother allegedly attacked the coach, resulting in injuries to the coach’s head, neck, face, and arms.

A colleague who witnessed the assault, along with several other unidentified individuals, tried to intervene and break up the violent confrontation. The suspects reportedly fled the scene before they could be apprehended. However, they were later located and arrested on charges of assault on a public servant.

After reviewing surveillance footage and conducting witness interviews, police confirmed the coach’s account of events. The investigation into the assault is still ongoing. Following their arrests, the 17-year-old student and his 22-year-old brother were released from Montgomery County Jail after posting $23,000 bail each.
