Police said the alleged sexual activity happened at the school two days before the arrest.
ASHEBORO, NC — An Asheboro High School staff member was arrested Friday after police said investigators found evidence supporting an allegation that she engaged in sexual activity with a juvenile student at the school.
Amber Walker, 39, was charged with two counts of sexual activity with a student, according to police. The case drew immediate attention in Asheboro because the allegation involved a school employee, a juvenile student and conduct police said occurred on campus during the school week.
Police said officers received information at about 10:30 a.m. Friday that a staff member at Asheboro High School had engaged in sexual activity with a juvenile student on Wednesday. Detectives opened an investigation the same day, reviewed the allegation and said they found evidence that supported it. Walker was taken into custody Friday afternoon. Police have not released the student’s name, age or grade, and officials have not said who first reported the allegation. “Detectives immediately launched an investigation,” police said in describing the response.
Walker was identified in local reports as Amber Elizabeth Walker, 39, of Greensboro. Authorities described her as a faculty or staff member at Asheboro High School, but they did not release a full job description in the first public reports. The school is part of Asheboro City Schools in Randolph County. Police said the alleged conduct involved a juvenile student at the school, but they did not describe the nature of the evidence, whether the incident was captured on school records or surveillance, or whether other students or staff members witnessed anything connected to the case.
The case centers on conduct that police said happened inside the school setting, a detail that raises the stakes for investigators and district officials. Asheboro High School serves students in grades 9 through 12 and includes academic, counseling, career and student support offices. Public district materials describe student services staff as part of a school system meant to support students’ academic, emotional and career needs. District policy materials reviewed in prior board records say employees are expected to maintain professional boundaries with students and model proper conduct in staff-student relationships.
Police had not announced additional charges as of Sunday, and early reports did not list a bond amount, court date or attorney for Walker. The case remained in the investigative stage after the arrest, with detectives expected to continue gathering statements and records tied to the allegation. It was not immediately clear whether the district had completed any separate personnel review. Reporters said they had reached out to Asheboro City Schools for more information. The district had not released a detailed public statement in the first reports reviewed Sunday.
The arrest came near the end of the school week, two days after the alleged incident. Police said the tip came Friday morning and that Walker was taken into custody later that day. The timing left many key details unanswered, including when school administrators learned of the allegation, whether Walker had contact with students after Wednesday, and whether the student received support services after the report. Officials also had not said whether the alleged conduct involved one incident or more than one act. The two counts indicate prosecutors are treating the case as two alleged offenses.
Asheboro is the county seat of Randolph County and sits in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina. Asheboro High School is one of the district’s central campuses and is tied to many citywide student programs, including career pathways, counseling and extracurricular activities. Allegations involving school employees often lead to parallel tracks: a criminal investigation by law enforcement and an employment review by the school district. In this case, police announced the arrest first, while the district’s public response was still limited in the earliest reports.
Sexual activity with a student is a felony charge in North Carolina when it involves a school employee or person in a position connected to a student. The charge does not require the public release of the student’s identity, and officials commonly withhold details that could identify a juvenile. Walker is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Prosecutors will decide how to proceed after reviewing the police investigation, evidence and any statements collected from the student, school staff or other witnesses.
The next public steps are expected to come through court records, police updates or a statement from Asheboro City Schools. As of Sunday, police had confirmed the arrest and the two charges, but major details remained unknown, including Walker’s employment status, bond conditions and first scheduled court appearance.
