Police said two juveniles were found shot Wednesday night near Iowa and South Talbott streets.
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — One juvenile died and another remained in critical condition after a shooting Wednesday night on Indianapolis’ near south side, where police found both victims wounded in the street, authorities said.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said officers were called around 9 p.m. to the intersection of Iowa Street and South Talbott Street on reports that two people had been shot. The area is near Madison Avenue and East Minnesota Street, just south of downtown Indianapolis.
Police said officers arrived and found two juveniles suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were reported in critical condition at the scene. One of the juveniles later died. The second juvenile remained in critical condition as investigators worked to learn what led to the shooting.
Authorities had not released the names or ages of the juveniles as of the latest update. Police also had not announced an arrest or named a suspect. Investigators did not immediately say whether the shooting happened after an argument, whether more than one person fired a gun or whether the victims knew the shooter.
The shooting brought homicide detectives to a near south side corridor of homes, businesses and neighborhood streets close to Madison Avenue. Police blocked off the area around Iowa and South Talbott streets while officers searched for evidence and spoke with people nearby. The investigation remained active late Wednesday.
IMPD said the case was being handled as a death investigation after one juvenile died from injuries suffered in the shooting. Detectives were expected to review evidence from the scene, check for nearby video and gather witness statements. The Marion County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death and identify the juvenile after family notifications are complete.
The shooting adds to concerns about youth gun violence in Indianapolis, where police and city leaders have faced repeated cases involving teenagers and firearms. In several recent incidents, juveniles have been among the victims, witnesses or people detained after shootings in different parts of the city. Officials have said those cases often require quick police work and careful family notifications because many records involving juveniles are limited from public release.
Police had not released a detailed suspect description by early Thursday. It was also not clear whether investigators recovered a firearm, how many shots were fired or whether any vehicles were connected to the case. No further injuries were reported in the first public updates from police.
The next steps include an autopsy, continued witness interviews and any public update from homicide detectives. The surviving juvenile’s condition may also shape the investigation if detectives are able to speak with that victim. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
The scene near Iowa Street and South Talbott Street remained the center of the case as detectives worked through the first hours after the shooting. No arrest had been announced, and police had not said when more information would be released.
