ATLANTA, GA – Marvin Motton, a Lyft driver from Atlanta, recounts the harrowing experience of being shot while on duty. The incident took place on the evening of September 30 at 1314 Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, leaving the 40-year-old driver with lasting injuries and unanswered questions.
Motton was just about to pick up a passenger when he was targeted in what appears to be a random act of violence. A man in a dark grey Infiniti shot at him, striking Motton twice below the waist.
“He could’ve gotten my face. He could’ve gotten my chest. I mean, my window was down- all the way down. So I’m lucky,” Motton reflected, his voice carrying the weight of the near-death experience. The event has left Motton grappling with both physical and psychological scars.
Despite his injuries, Motton’s priority was to seek medical assistance. Attempting to drive himself to the hospital, he had to stop and call 911 for help. The quick intervention by Atlanta police officers who applied pressure to his wounds was critical.
Motton spent three weeks in the hospital before being released to face a long road to recovery. He is committed to finding out why he was attacked and ensuring the perpetrator is apprehended. However, the police have yet to make any significant progress, prompting his appeal to the public for information.
Financial pressures have forced Motton back onto the road, driving for Lyft again even as he recovers from his injuries. He remains vigilant, aware of the risks, and is raising funds for his medical bills.
