Deputies said two civilians and an Osceola County deputy were taken to hospitals after the crash.
KISSIMMEE, FL — A 21-year-old man was arrested after deputies said he chased his teenage ex-girlfriend on U.S. 192, fired into the car she was riding in and caused a crash that injured three people.
Christian Rivera was booked into the Osceola County Jail after the late-night chase in Kissimmee, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said. The case now centers on a 911 call made by a 17-year-old girl who told dispatchers her ex-boyfriend was following her vehicle and shooting at it. The crash injured the girl, her 20-year-old friend and a deputy who was responding to help them.
Deputies said the call came in just after 11 p.m. Monday, June 8, as the girl and her friend were traveling in a Mitsubishi Lancer. The girl told 911 that Rivera was chasing them in another vehicle. Investigators said Rivera followed the Lancer along U.S. 192 and fired several shots into the passenger side of the car, where the girl was seated. The pair were trying to get to an Osceola County Sheriff’s Office station when the chase turned into a crash. Walter Valle, who said the wreck happened near his father’s home, said his father “looked through the windows and saw that an accident had taken place.”
The sheriff’s office said Rivera was driving a BMW 330i when he rammed the Mitsubishi Lancer. The impact forced the Lancer into eastbound lanes of U.S. 192, where it collided with a deputy’s patrol vehicle. The deputy had been responding to the 911 call from the girl, officials said. The teenage girl and the 20-year-old driver were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The deputy also was taken to a hospital, where officials said the deputy was treated and released. Deputies did not release the names of the girl, her friend or the injured deputy. Officials also did not say whether either civilian remained hospitalized later Tuesday.
Rivera faces two counts of attempted murder, discharging a firearm from a vehicle and fleeing and eluding a police officer, the sheriff’s office said. Investigators did not release details about what they believe led to the chase. They also did not say how many shots were fired, whether a gun was recovered or whether any bullets struck either person inside the Lancer. The sheriff’s office described the 17-year-old as Rivera’s former girlfriend. The crash shut down part of the area while deputies, crash investigators and emergency crews worked the scene.
The case unfolded on one of Osceola County’s busiest roadways, a corridor used by residents, tourists and emergency vehicles moving through the Kissimmee area. U.S. 192 runs near homes, hotels, shops and routes to major Central Florida attractions. The late-night crash brought gunfire, a domestic violence allegation and a patrol vehicle collision into the same investigation. Officials said the girl and her friend were actively seeking help when the crash occurred. Valle said the scene added fear for neighbors. “We’re very concerned, we’re very scared about these kinds of events,” he said.
Rivera remained in custody after his arrest, according to the sheriff’s office. The charges announced by deputies are accusations, and prosecutors will decide how to move the case through court. Investigators are expected to rely on the 911 call, crash evidence, vehicle damage, witness statements and any shell casings or bullet damage found during the inquiry. No court date was listed in the initial sheriff’s office account. Authorities had not announced additional arrests or released more information about the victims’ medical conditions by the time of the update.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation was continuing after Rivera’s booking. The next public milestone is expected to come through court filings or an additional law enforcement update on the shooting, crash evidence and the injured victims’ conditions.
