Man accused of stabbing neighbor on oxygen

DEERFIELD BEACH, FL – In a quiet community known for its tranquility, chaos erupted when a man allegedly attacked his neighbor, a person he’d known for years, without any apparent reason.

Paul Vargas Arana, 48, faces serious charges after a weekend altercation that nearly claimed the life of Anthony Realmuto. The Broward Sheriff’s Office responded swiftly to the Century Village East Community, finding Realmuto gravely injured with a chest wound that punctured his lung.

Arana appeared in court facing an attempted first-degree murder charge. Authorities claim the attack was unprovoked. Realmuto had just returned from a day out when Arana, reportedly wearing surgical gloves and armed with a makeshift weapon, launched his assault.

Realmuto, who has COPD and relies on oxygen, collapsed from his injuries. His wife, witnessing the attack, tried to protect him with a metal pipe, but Arana allegedly continued his violent spree.

In court, Arana was visibly concerned about not being able to reach his lawyer. He remains in custody without bond. Realmuto is still in the hospital, his condition critical but stable.

The incident has left residents puzzled and uneasy. Realmuto, when questioned, suggested that mental health issues might be involved, though the exact reasons for the attack remain unknown.

As the investigation continues, the community is left to wonder about the motivations behind this shocking act of violence.
