BRANDON, FL – A harrowing encounter turned into a swift apprehension after a woman used her quick thinking and technology to aid law enforcement in capturing a suspect accused of kidnapping and robbery. The incident unfolded last month when a woman, who had arranged to meet a man she connected with online, found herself at the center of a terrifying ordeal.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the woman agreed to meet the man at a Motel 6 in Brandon. However, the situation took a dangerous turn when the man, identified as 26-year-old Elijah Silva Elshabaz, allegedly brandished a firearm and demanded her valuables. In a moment of acute distress, the woman managed to leave one of her two cell phones in Elshabaz’s vehicle, which later proved pivotal in tracking him down.
While being held at gunpoint, the woman cleverly used her other phone to maintain communication with the suspect, pretending to comply with his demands. She convinced him that she was retrieving money from her hotel room, but instead, she discreetly contacted 911, relaying critical information to the authorities.
Upon arriving at the scene, deputies quickly learned about the phone left in the suspect’s car. Utilizing the ‘Find My’ app, they were able to trace the location of the vehicle, setting off a pursuit that ended with Elshabaz’s arrest following a crash.
The Sheriff’s Office commended the woman’s presence of mind, highlighting her actions as exemplary in a high-pressure situation. Her resourcefulness not only safeguarded her but also facilitated the successful capture of the suspect, who is now facing multiple charges, including armed kidnapping, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
