TIJERAS, N.M. – A chilling tragedy unfolded in the East Mountains as three members of a family were found dead, with their own kin accused of committing the crime. This case has brought back memories for Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen, reminiscent of the infamous Nehemiah Griego case. Authorities arrested 24-year-old Adlai Mestre, suspected of fatally shooting his parents, his 17-year-old sister, and even the family dog.
According to deputies, Mestre was speaking about killing his family and mentioning hearing seismic waves when taken into custody. Sheriff Allen emphasized the difficulty faced by both the community and law enforcement whenever such a loss occurs. The investigation continues as officials seek to understand the underlying causes leading to this horrific event.
Sheriff Allen voiced concerns about the current system, indicating that changes might be necessary to prevent future tragedies. Mestre was apprehended with a loaded firearm that was legally purchased by his mother. Allen criticized the lack of action under the Red Flag Law, which enables the temporary removal of firearms from individuals who are considered to be a risk to themselves or others.
Mestre has a documented history of mental health treatment, which Allen believes could have triggered actions to prevent this violent incident. Although the Red Flag Law might not have entirely prevented the tragedy, it could have prompted essential preventive measures.
In light of this case, Allen hopes lawmakers will heed his warnings when they convene in the upcoming legislative session. Questions persist regarding the circumstances surrounding the murders, preventative measures, and steps to avoid similar cases in the future.
As the investigation continues, Mestre faces multiple charges, including murder, tampering with evidence, and attempting to escape from custody after briefly fleeing an interrogation room. He is currently incarcerated at the Bernalillo County jail.
