Man critical after early morning shooting

PATERSON, NJ – An early morning shooting in the Fox Metals neighborhood left a man critically injured and prompted a police investigation, leaving residents with growing concerns about safety in their community. Police arrived at the scene just after 8 a.m. on Friday, wrapping the area in crime scene tape as detectives began their inquiry.

Longtime resident Harrell Irving was among those who witnessed the commotion. At 84, she was opening her front door to welcome the morning light when she was met with flashing police lights instead. This unsettling sight was a stark reminder of the violence that has become all too familiar in her neighborhood.

Authorities confirmed that the victim was rushed to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition. As investigators worked, a small crowd, possibly family and friends of the victim, gathered outside, their presence adding to the tension in the air. Among the officers, one could be seen carrying an infant, a poignant image that underscored the incident’s impact on the entire community.

The shooting has left Irving contemplating a move from the area she has called home for nearly 50 years. “It’s scary,” she admitted, reflecting on the recent surge of violence. Her fears are not unfounded; police records indicate that over the past year, there have been 262 calls within a half-mile radius of Friday’s shooting, including reports of homicides, assaults, and robberies.

The sense of unease is palpable among residents, who feel they must constantly remain vigilant. Despite their concerns, many are left with unanswered questions as the investigation continues.

Police detained a woman at the scene, though her involvement in the shooting remains unclear. The community waits anxiously for further developments, hoping for answers and a sense of safety to return to their streets.
