OCEAN CITY, NJ – A New Jersey son is facing charges after reportedly admitting to the decapitation and murder of his 74-year-old mother. Jeffrey Surgent, 46, from Ocean City, is believed to have used a knife in the brutal killing of his mother, Alexandria Surgent, according to several sources.
Surgent called 911 around 4 p.m. on Friday and confessed to the killing, also admitting that he is diagnosed with bipolar disorder, as per court reports. When police arrived at the accused’s apartment, they allegedly found him naked, on top of his mother’s decapitated body. Surgent reportedly apologized to the officers for his brutal act.
Surgent was subsequently arrested and charged with murder, possessing a weapon for an illegal purpose, as well as the unlawful possession of a weapon. He is currently detained at Cape May County.
On the day of the incident, Surgent’s mother was visiting her son, the family told reporters. The apartment building where the murder occurred is part of the Ocean City Housing Authority, and surveillance footage from the premises is playing a role in the ongoing investigation.
The Ocean City Police Department is leading the inquiry, in conjunction with the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the New Jersey Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
Chase Surgent, Alexandria’s grandson, has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses. Viewing his late grandmother as the “greatest grandmother in the world,” Chase mournfully expressed that she “lived with us and helped us with our day-to-day lives.”
The Ocean City Police Department has yet to comment on the ongoing investigation.
