Police detained a man at the scene after the 70-year-old victim was shot Friday morning along Ogontz Avenue.
PHILADELPHIA, PA — A 70-year-old man was fatally shot Friday morning outside an auto body shop in Philadelphia after an argument that a witness said began over vehicle repair work, according to police and local reports.
The shooting happened about 8:30 a.m. Aug. 14 in the front parking lot of A1 Plus Auto in the 5900 block of Ogontz Avenue. Philadelphia police responding to the scene found the wounded man and took him to Jefferson Einstein Hospital. Police said he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Authorities had not publicly released his name Friday.
A man was taken into custody at the scene, police said. Authorities had not announced charges or publicly identified the person in custody as of Friday. Police also had not released an official account of what led to the shooting, and the homicide investigation remained underway.
A witness who was working nearby told WPVI-TV that he heard three men arguing before the confrontation became physical. The witness said he tried to intervene and that the men fought several times before one of them produced a gun. His account had not been independently confirmed by police.
The witness told the television station that the disagreement began between a mechanic and a customer over repair work on a vehicle. He said the worker’s son later became involved in the confrontation. Police had not publicly confirmed those details or identified the relationships among the people involved.
Investigators placed evidence markers around items found near the shop, including spent shell casings, hats and cellphones, according to WPVI. A metal pipe was also collected as evidence. Authorities had not explained what role, if any, those items played in the confrontation.
The shooting occurred outside the shop’s garage bays during the morning business hours. A nearby witness described the victim to WPVI as a quiet man who did not bother others. Neighbors told the station that the auto body business had operated at the location for decades and had recently changed ownership.
Flyers at the property advertised a grand opening celebration scheduled for Saturday, according to WPVI. It was not immediately clear Friday whether that event would proceed following the shooting.
Police accounts reported by NBC10, FOX 29 and The Philadelphia Inquirer confirmed that officers responded to the 5900 block of Ogontz Avenue at about 8:30 a.m., that the 70-year-old victim died after being taken to a hospital and that a man was detained at the scene. The reports did not identify the victim or announce any criminal charges.
Philadelphia homicide detectives continued investigating Friday. Police had not released a confirmed motive, the identity of the man in custody or additional information about possible charges.
