MESQUITE, TX – A leisurely walk to a local grocery store turned fatal for 52-year-old Alan Belcher when he was hit by a drunk driver in Mesquite, Texas. The incident occurred near Albertsons off Motley Drive around 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Alan Belcher, who lived on disability, was known for his unwavering commitment to caring for his blind, 90-year-old mother, Virginia Higginson. Alan would routinely walk to the store to pick up essential groceries and his mother’s medicine. When he did not return until 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, his mother began to worry. “He was never out beyond 8:15,” Higginson shared.
The driver has been identified as 18-year-old Jose Martinez from Garland. Martinez has been arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter by the police, who are currently investigating his activities before the crash and awaiting blood alcohol test results.
Belcher’s untimely death has left his family and community in shock. Known for his affectionate nature, Belcher had overcome many challenges in his life. In addition to being a devoted caregiver for his mother, he was also an active member of the Shiloh Terrance Baptist Church. The family is seeking justice for what they describe as a tragic injustice.
Belcher will be laid to rest next Monday. Contributions towards funeral expenses have been pouring in from family members and his 1992 graduating high school class from North Mesquite. According to Mesquite Police, Martinez has posted a $20,000 bond and has since been released from custody.
