A 25-year-old woman was arrested after a fatal shooting at Center Street Park.
MILWAUKEE, WI — A 23-year-old Milwaukee man was shot and killed Saturday evening at Center Street Park during a large outdoor gathering, and a 25-year-old Milwaukee woman was arrested at the scene, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said.
The shooting brought sheriff’s deputies, Milwaukee police officers and firefighters to the park near North 65th and West Center streets just after 6:45 p.m. May 30. Authorities said the man was found dead with at least two gunshot wounds. No other injuries were reported. Investigators said they believe the man and the woman knew each other, but they had not released their names or a possible motive by late Saturday.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said law enforcement was called to Center Street Park while a “large picnic-style social gathering” was underway. Deputies, Milwaukee police and Milwaukee Fire Department personnel responded to the park, where officers found the victim with gunshot wounds. The woman arrested in connection with the shooting had two firearms in her possession, authorities said. The sheriff’s office did not say whether either weapon had been identified as the gun used in the shooting. Detectives remained assigned to the case Saturday night, and officials said the investigation was ongoing.
Center Street Park sits at 6420 W. Clarke St., near the Milwaukee and Wauwatosa border. The small Milwaukee County park covers about 4.5 acres and includes a pavilion building, restrooms, a play area, athletic space and picnic areas. Local reports from the scene described a large police response, with squad vehicles from the sheriff’s office and Milwaukee Police Department near the park and crime scene tape marking off part of the area. Authorities said the shooting happened during an outdoor gathering, but they did not say how many people were at the park when shots were fired.
The victim’s identity had not been released pending official notification and review by county authorities. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office was notified after the shooting, a step that commonly follows a fatal incident. The sheriff’s office did not announce charges Saturday night. In homicide investigations, detectives typically collect witness statements, process the scene, review firearms evidence and prepare reports for prosecutors. No hearing date, charging decision or court appearance had been announced in the hours after the arrest.
The shooting followed a Saturday marked by other police calls in Milwaukee, including separate morning shootings that injured two people. Authorities did not connect those cases to the fatal shooting at Center Street Park. The sheriff’s office said only that investigators believe the victim and the arrested woman knew each other. That detail narrowed the early focus of the investigation but left several key questions unanswered, including what led to the gunfire, whether an argument happened before the shooting and whether any additional people were being sought.
By Saturday night, the park that had hosted a social gathering had become a homicide scene. News crews at the area saw law enforcement vehicles and yellow tape as investigators worked near the park. Officials did not report injuries to bystanders, police, deputies or fire personnel. The arrest of the woman at the scene gave detectives an early person in custody, but authorities did not say whether she was expected to remain jailed or whether the case would be reviewed by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.
The case remained under investigation early Sunday. The next public updates are expected to include the victim’s name, any charging decision and more details on what happened before the shooting.
