Man Killed in Shooting After Apparent Parking Dispute

Police said the person who fired the gun reported acting in self-defense.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A man was fatally shot Wednesday night in Philadelphia’s Germantown section after what police described as an apparent parking dispute on the 6100 block of Magnolia Street.

Police said the shooting happened around 7:20 p.m. or 7:30 p.m., according to early reports from investigators. The victim was found wounded and taken to Einstein Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 7:49 p.m. The case remained under investigation Thursday, June 11, with no charges filed and no public identification of the victim released.

Officers were called to Magnolia Street after reports of gunfire in the East Germantown area. Police said they found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. One early police account described a wound to the chest, while another said the man had multiple gunshot wounds. The difference had not been publicly resolved by Thursday morning. Philadelphia Police Capt. Louis Higginson said the person who fired the gun contacted police afterward and reported that he acted in self-defense. That person was being questioned by investigators.

The shooting drew homicide detectives to a residential block where police said the dispute appeared to center on parking. Authorities had not released the names or ages of the victim or the person who fired the gun. They also had not said whether the two men knew each other, whether a weapon was recovered, how many shots were fired or whether surveillance video captured the confrontation. Police did not announce an arrest in the hours after the shooting. The Homicide Unit was assigned to the case as investigators worked to determine what happened before the gunfire.

Higginson said officers had been called to the same neighborhood in January for a separate dispute that also was believed to involve parking. Police did not say whether the January response involved the same people or the same address. The earlier call added context to the investigation because parking disputes can be a source of repeated friction on tight residential blocks, but authorities had not linked the two incidents beyond the reported subject of the disputes. By Thursday morning, police had released only limited details about the Wednesday night confrontation.

The legal status of the case remained unsettled. Police said no charges had been filed as of the latest public update. Investigators were expected to review statements, physical evidence, medical findings and any available video before deciding whether to refer the case for charges. The person who fired the gun was being questioned, but police had not described that person as a suspect in a public statement. The claim of self-defense remained under review and had not been accepted or rejected by authorities.

The block of Magnolia Street remained the center of the investigation after officers and detectives responded Wednesday night. Early reports said the victim was rushed from the scene to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead less than 30 minutes after police were called. CBS News Philadelphia reported that the shooting happened around 7:30 p.m., while 6abc reported it happened around 7:20 p.m. NBC10 reported officers were called around 7:23 p.m. Those times place the shooting in the same brief evening window.

Police had not scheduled a public briefing by Thursday morning. The next major steps are expected to include confirmation of the victim’s identity, review by homicide detectives and a decision on whether charges will be filed. The investigation remained open June 11.
