Man killed in shooting at Atlanta bus station

Police detained one person and searched for three others after gunfire near Oakland City station.

ATLANTA, GA — A man was shot and killed Monday evening near the Oakland City MARTA station in southwest Atlanta, prompting police to detain one person and search for three others after reports of gunfire at the bus loop.

MARTA police said officers were called just after 6 p.m. April 27 to the Oakland City station on Lee Street after shots were reported. The shooting left one man dead at the scene and brought a large police response to an area used by bus and rail riders. Authorities had not released the victim’s name, the detained person’s name or the names of the three people still being sought as of Tuesday.

The shooting happened around the Oakland City bus loop, a transit area along Lee Street in southwest Atlanta. Early reports described the victim as being shot as he stepped off a MARTA bus. When officers arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. MARTA police said the investigation “remains active,” and officers worked into the evening to secure the station area and nearby streets. Police did not immediately say whether the victim had been targeted, whether he knew the people involved or what led to the shooting.

Authorities said one suspect was detained after the shooting, but three other suspects were still being sought Monday night. Officers set up a perimeter focused around a nearby apartment complex on Oakland Lane, close to the station and bus loop. Investigators had not released descriptions of the suspects, details about any vehicle, or whether a weapon had been recovered. The victim’s identity was withheld pending family notification. Police also had not said whether anyone else was injured. The station sits near residential blocks, apartments and major roadways that connect riders to southwest Atlanta neighborhoods.

The Oakland City station is part of MARTA’s rail and bus network and serves riders moving through southwest Atlanta. The shooting drew attention because it unfolded in a public transit setting during the evening travel period, when passengers are often moving between buses, trains and nearby streets. MARTA police handle law enforcement duties across the transit system, while Atlanta police may assist depending on the location and nature of an incident. Officials did not immediately say whether the shooting disrupted rail service, bus routes or access to the station after officers arrived.

The case remained in its early stages Tuesday, with key facts still unknown. MARTA police had not announced charges against the person detained, and they had not said whether that person was considered the suspected shooter or a possible witness. No court appearance had been announced. Investigators were expected to review station cameras, bus cameras and nearby surveillance video as they worked to identify the three people still being sought. Police also were expected to interview riders, employees and residents near Oakland Lane and Lee Street who may have seen the shooting or the people who fled.

Images from the scene showed police vehicles and officers around the station area as the investigation unfolded. The bus loop and nearby streets were marked by a heavy law enforcement presence while officers searched the area. MARTA police did not release a detailed timeline beyond the initial call after 6 p.m. and the discovery of the victim. Officials also did not say how many shots were fired, where the victim was standing when he was hit or whether the gunfire came from inside the bus loop, on a sidewalk or from another nearby location.

By Tuesday, the victim had not been publicly identified, one person was in custody and three others remained the focus of the search. MARTA police said the investigation was ongoing, and the next major update is expected when authorities release suspect information, charges or the victim’s name.
