Man shoots and kills coworker for taking long breaks

LEWISVILLE, TX – A chilling incident unfolded in a Lewisville office last week, where authorities say an employee shot and killed a coworker over a grievance regarding work breaks. The suspect, 51-year-old Travis Merrill, was arrested after allegedly shooting Tamhara Collazo, his colleague at Allegiance Trucks.

The office, located near the temporary headquarters of the Lewisville Police Department, witnessed the tragic event, allowing officers to respond swiftly. Despite their quick attempt to save her, Collazo succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

Reports reveal that Merrill had developed an unhealthy fixation on Collazo, becoming increasingly agitated with what he deemed excessive breaks during work hours. These grievances eventually spiraled into a deadly obsession, authorities say.

Collazo had reported Merrill’s behavior to human resources, leading to a temporary leave and counseling for Merrill. However, his rage reportedly intensified upon his return, as Collazo continued to distance herself from him. Merrill confessed to purchasing firearms and practicing with them, harboring thoughts of retaliation whenever his anger surged, waiting for what he perceived as the “right time.”

On the fateful day, Merrill reportedly followed Collazo outside during her lunch break and armed himself with two revolvers from his vehicle. Police say he ambushed her upon her return, firing multiple shots in her cubicle, tragically ending her life in front of numerous coworkers.

Merrill surrendered to police when they arrived, providing detailed accounts of Collazo’s break durations, claiming he wanted her to experience the same pain he felt. He is currently held in the Denton County jail on murder charges, with his bond set at $10 million.

Allegiance Trucks expressed profound sorrow over the incident, describing the loss as devastating. The company has closed its Lewisville office indefinitely and is assisting Collazo’s family while cooperating with law enforcement. They implore the community for support as they navigate the aftermath of this tragic event.
