Man shot to death during fight with neighbor

CANTON TOWNSHIP, MI – A man is currently being held in custody, suspected of fatally shooting another man in Canton Township. The incident transpired at around 11:48 a.m. on Aug. 10, 2024, within a residential area in the 200 block of Cornell Street.

According to witnesses, a struggle between the two men, both residents of the same neighborhood, preceded the shooting. Responding police officers discovered a 35-year-old man lying on the street with a gunshot wound. Efforts to move him to a safe spot were made, and he received first-aid from the Canton Township firefighters and paramedics.

Subsequently, the wounded man was rushed to a nearby hospital to receive treatment. However, he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the deceased victim of the shooting has been withheld pending the notification of his family.

After the confrontation, the suspected shooter reportedly barricaded himself within his residence. However, officers managed to persuade the man to surrender. He is now in police custody awaiting charges.

Explaining the intensity of the situation, Canton Police Chief Chad Baugh referred to the event as a “senseless act of violence” and extended their deepest condolences to the victim’s family and the traumatized neighbors.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case for levying charges against the suspect.
