Police said the 52-year-old victim was washing his hands when he was attacked.
SAN ANTONIO, TX— A 52-year-old man was stabbed seven to nine times in the back Wednesday afternoon while washing his hands in a downtown public restroom, San Antonio police said, in an attack investigators described as apparently random.
Police were called just before 3 p.m. Wednesday to the 100 block of Camaron Street for a reported cutting in progress. Officers found the injured man after the attack and said he was expected to survive. The suspect had not been publicly identified in the initial report, and police did not immediately say whether anyone had been arrested.
The stabbing happened in a public restroom in the downtown area, according to police. An officer at the scene said the victim was washing his hands when another man stabbed him in the back multiple times. Investigators said early information did not show a clear connection between the two men. Police described the case as an apparent random attack, though the motive remained under investigation.
Emergency responders treated the victim and took him for medical care. Police said he suffered several stab wounds but was expected to live. Officials did not release his name, the hospital where he was taken or a full update on his condition. The number of wounds was described by police as about seven to nine, all to the victim’s back.
The 100 block of Camaron Street sits in a busy part of downtown San Antonio, near government offices, service providers and pedestrian routes used throughout the day. The area includes public spaces where workers, residents and people seeking services often pass through. Police did not say whether the restroom was part of a public building, a private property or another facility open to the public.
Investigators were still working to determine what happened before the stabbing. Police did not release a detailed suspect description in the first public accounts. They also did not say whether a weapon had been recovered, whether surveillance video was being reviewed or whether witnesses had given statements. No charges had been announced in the early report.
The case began as a cutting in progress call, the term police often use for a stabbing or knife assault. Officers responded while the scene was still active or newly reported. The public details released so far centered on the victim’s actions moments before the attack: He was washing his hands when the suspect came at him from behind, police said.
Authorities have not said whether the suspect fled on foot, remained nearby or was known to people in the area. They also have not said whether the victim was a downtown worker, visitor or resident. The investigation remained focused on identifying the suspect, confirming the motive and gathering evidence from the restroom and surrounding block.
The victim was expected to survive as of the latest public update. Police had not announced an arrest or a next briefing, and the case remained under investigation Thursday.
