Man with decades-long criminal record busted when sex trafficking victim contacts police

SOUTHFIELD, MI – In a dramatic turn of events at a Southfield hotel, a 41-year-old man has been arrested on charges of human trafficking following a distress call made from the Sonesta Suites. The call, placed late Thursday night, came from a woman who claimed to be ensnared in a sex trafficking operation.

Authorities responded swiftly, capturing the suspect whose young son was found in a nearby room under the supervision of a female caretaker, also suspected to be a victim. The arrest was captured on police body cameras, with the suspect expressing disbelief over the charges against him.

Facing a $3 million bond, the suspect is now at the center of a troubling case that has drawn attention to the issue of human trafficking in the area. Southfield’s police chief has conveyed a strong message against such crimes, underscoring the city’s commitment to maintaining safety and order.

The victim, a 32-year-old woman, recounted her ordeal, which began in Georgia when she was homeless. She alleges that the suspect coerced her into moving to Michigan, where she was subjected to daily exploitation and deprived of basic needs, surviving only on coffee and sea moss.

Law enforcement officials detailed how the suspect exerted control by seizing her personal belongings and cutting off communication with the outside world. He allegedly instilled fear by claiming gang ties and a long history of criminal activity.

Despite these threats, no weapons were found during the suspect’s arrest. The victim managed to flee by strategically leaving phone chargers in a car, knowing it would prompt the suspect to leave her alone temporarily.

This case sheds light on the dark realities of human trafficking, where victims are often manipulated and isolated. Efforts are now being made to provide support and protection to those affected, while the investigation continues.
