SOUTHPORT, NC – A tranquil evening at a waterfront bar turned into chaos when a gunman opened fire from a boat, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to five others. The suspect, identified as Nigel Edge, allegedly carried out the attack with an assault rifle, targeting patrons who were enjoying live music about 30 miles south of Wilmington.
Authorities have labeled the incident a premeditated attack, with Edge reportedly fleeing the scene by boat after the shooting. He was apprehended shortly after in a nearby town while attempting to reload at a boat access point. Edge, a resident of Oak Island, has claimed to be a combat veteran suffering from PTSD.
The attack has left the small coastal community in shock. Residents gathered to honor the victims at the bar, now a crime scene, recalling the horror of the night. One local described the situation as “shooting fish in a barrel,” given the limited escape options for those on the pier.
The victims were primarily vacationers, adding an additional layer of tragedy to the event. Edge is currently held without bond and faces charges that may lead to the death penalty, as the District Attorney’s office weighs its options.
The community, known for its peaceful atmosphere, continues to grapple with the aftermath of the violence, seeking solace and justice in equal measure.
