Missing Father and 4-Year-Old Son Found Dead in Texas

Authorities found a man and child dead in Gainesville after an Amber Alert and interstate search for Caleb and Andres Furley.

GAINESVILLE, TX — A missing Norman, Oklahoma, father and his 4-year-old son were found dead Wednesday in Gainesville after police investigating an Amber Alert traced the pair to a North Texas business, according to authorities and local law enforcement reports.

Caleb Furley, 25, and his son, Andres “Harry” Furley, had been missing since Sunday evening. Norman police initially investigated their disappearance as a missing-person case before Oklahoma authorities issued an Endangered Missing Advisory and later an Amber Alert for Andres. By Wednesday, the search had shifted south into Texas after investigators learned the father and child had apparently been seen in Gainesville.

Gainesville police became involved early Wednesday after a relative contacted officers and reported that Caleb and Andres had been seen Monday afternoon at a business in the 1500 block of North Grand Avenue. Police said officers had previously responded to a call from the same area involving a suspicious situation with a man and child but were unable to locate them at that time.

An investigator returned to the business after it opened Wednesday and reviewed surveillance video. Police said the footage appeared to show the missing father and son at the location Monday afternoon. The pair were then seen walking away from the area, prompting officers to search nearby locations for them and for the pickup truck they were believed to have been using.

During that search, an investigator found a deceased man and child, according to Gainesville police. Norman police later said Caleb and Andres had been found in Gainesville. Earlier reports said the medical examiner was working to formally identify the bodies. Authorities had not publicly released a cause or manner of death by Wednesday evening.

The case began after Norman police were contacted Oct. 12 about a missing father and son. Investigators determined Andres had last been seen with Caleb at about 7 p.m. Oct. 11 in Norman. An Endangered Missing Advisory issued Tuesday said an extensive search had failed to locate the two and that authorities were concerned for their welfare.

The case escalated Wednesday when the Oklahoma Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert for Andres. The alert said Caleb had failed to appear for an exchange with the child’s mother and that a warrant had been issued for Caleb on an allegation of parental kidnapping. The alert also said authorities believed the pair could be traveling in a silver 2012 Dodge Ram quad-cab pickup with an Oklahoma license plate.

The Amber Alert identified Andres as 4 years old with brown hair and brown eyes. Caleb was listed as 25 years old with brown hair and blue eyes. Authorities had asked anyone who saw the pair or their vehicle to contact law enforcement as investigators worked to determine where they had gone after leaving Norman.

The Texas Department of Public Safety Rangers were called to assist Gainesville police with the investigation. Authorities had not announced what led to the deaths, where precisely the bodies were found or whether investigators believed another person was involved. Those questions remained under investigation Wednesday.

The discovery ended the search for the father and child but opened a death investigation spanning Oklahoma and Texas. Officials had not released additional findings from the medical examiner or announced a final determination about the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
