Kidnapped Boy Found At Omaha McDonald’s

A 51-year-old man was arrested after Iowa authorities issued a nationwide kidnapping warrant.

OMAHA, NE — An 8-year-old Iowa boy reported missing Sunday morning was found safe hours later in Omaha, where police and Nebraska troopers arrested a 51-year-old man wanted on a kidnapping warrant.

The search began in Shelby County, Iowa, and moved quickly across state lines after authorities said the child, Dane Coffman, had last been seen with Garry Ray McBreen. Iowa officials issued an Endangered Person Advisory early May 31, then canceled it at 12:30 p.m. after the boy was located.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said Coffman was reported missing May 31. Officials described him as 4 feet tall, weighing 80 pounds, with blue eyes and blond hair. McBreen was described as 6 feet tall, weighing 185 pounds, with green eyes. “The Endangered Person Advisory issued earlier this morning has been canceled,” the Iowa Department of Public Safety said in its update. “The child has been located.”

Omaha police said the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office issued the advisory around 5:30 a.m. Sunday. Investigators said McBreen was believed to be traveling in a silver vehicle, with officials initially listing a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe with an Iowa plate and a 2009 Dodge Journey with an Iowa plate. Omaha police later said Shelby County authorities had issued a nationwide kidnapping warrant for McBreen, who was reported to be in a silver 2009 Dodge Journey.

Officers were sent to the McDonald’s near 84th Street and Papillion Parkway around 11:30 a.m. after receiving information that McBreen and the child were inside the vehicle at that location, Omaha police said. Multiple Omaha officers and Nebraska State Patrol troopers responded. Authorities said the boy was safely found at the scene. McBreen was taken into custody without incident and booked into Douglas County Corrections.

The case brought together agencies from Iowa and Nebraska during a fast-moving search that lasted several hours. Iowa officials did not release details on the relationship between Coffman and McBreen, where the child had last been seen before the alert, or what led investigators to the Omaha restaurant. Officials also did not release details on the child’s condition beyond saying he had been located safely.

McBreen remained in custody in Douglas County after the arrest. The next steps are expected to include court proceedings tied to the kidnapping warrant and coordination between Nebraska authorities and Shelby County officials. It was not immediately clear Sunday whether McBreen had an attorney or when he would make an initial court appearance.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety said the advisory was issued from Harlan, Iowa, about 50 miles northeast of Omaha by road. The alert asked law enforcement and the public to watch for Coffman, McBreen and the listed vehicles. By early afternoon, the advisory had shifted from an active search to a located-person update.

Authorities have not announced additional arrests. The investigation remained active Sunday as Iowa officials handled the underlying missing-child case and Nebraska authorities handled the Omaha arrest. The next public milestone is expected to be the release of court or booking records connected to McBreen’s arrest.
