WARREN, MI – A devastating tragedy unfolded in Warren on Sunday when police responded to a domestic violence emergency on Geoffry Road, resulting in police discovering an apparent murder-suicide involving a 49-year-old mother and her 26-year-old special needs son.
According to Lt. John Gajewski of the Warren Police Department, the incident began when a 33-year-old son awoke to find his mother aiming a gun at him. In a desperate struggle, he managed to disarm her and fled to a neighbor’s house to call 911.
Upon arrival, officers quickly established a perimeter around the residence. Shortly afterward, they heard a gunshot from inside the home. Police forced entry, concerned about potential threats or injuries and discovered the mother had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. As they continued to search the house, they tragically found her younger son deceased, victim to what investigators believe was a homicide.
Authorities suspect the mother shot her special needs son before turning the weapon on herself. Lt. Gajewski emphasized the importance of mental health resources, stating that reaching out for help could potentially avert such horrific outcomes.
The Warren Police Department is urging individuals to utilize available mental health services if they or someone they know is in distress. Support systems, including hotlines and counseling services, can provide crucial assistance.
