TULARE, CA – A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Tulare, California when a home invasion resulted in the death of a mother and her son.
Surveillance footage from last Thursday captures a man attempting to break into houses along Berkeley Way. Authorities say the suspect, Fabian Gamez, 30, appeared discouraged by a camera before approaching another residence nearby. There, Gamez reportedly tried to intrude through the backyard, where he was confronted by 58-year-old homeowner Melissa Quinn.
In the violent altercation that followed, Gamez attacked Quinn with a knife. Her son, Raymond Garza, 38, attempted to defend her but was also fatally wounded in the attack. Both succumbed to their injuries, leaving the family devastated.
Michael Garza, Melissa’s second son, described the immense loss of his family members. “They were our protectors,” he shared. A younger sibling present during the attack was able to incapacitate the intruder with a gun until law enforcement arrived.
The household was full at the time, including Melissa’s father, and Raymond’s children aged 7, 9, and 19. These young ones are now grappling with the psychological aftermath, having previously lost their mother in 2019. The emotional and psychological toll weighs heavily on the family as they mourn for their lost loved ones.
The suspect, Gamez, has a record of previous altercations with law enforcement. Detectives suspect he had been scouting the neighborhood Wednesday night. He has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and a count of residential burglary. Gamez pleaded not guilty in court earlier this week and is set to reappear next month.
The victims’ family members remain committed to pursuing justice while cherishing their memories. Melissa and Raymond are remembered for their vibrant personalities and nurturing spirits. In their wake, they leave behind Raymond’s three children, Melissa’s six grandchildren, and cherished memories.
The family has established a GoFundMe page to aid with funeral expenses, a final tribute to the lives lost too soon.
