ANTIOCH, CA – A 46-year-old man has been charged with murder following the grisly discovery of his mother and half-brother’s decomposing bodies inside their home on Fairmont Street in Antioch. Police arrested Mark Taylor, who was detained while attempting to leave the residence Wednesday evening.
The victims, a 65-year-old woman and her 39-year-old son, were found after a foul odor raised the alarm among neighbors, who initially reported the smell to property managers on September 2nd. They suspected a dead animal was responsible, unaware of the tragic reality within the home.
Authorities suspect the bodies may have been there since early to mid-August. Police initially responded to a welfare check that was requested by the property manager. They arrived at the scene shortly after 4 p.m.
Mikala Thomas, a neighbor, described the heavy police presence, noting multiple squad cars lined up outside the apartments upon her arrival.
Police records indicate prior altercations at the residence, including a reported fight between Taylor and his half-brother in January. Neighbors recall the mother as a kind individual who often shared holiday treats but noted her absence for several months leading up to the discovery.
As the investigation continues, officers will deliberate the charges against Taylor alongside the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s office. Community members are urged to help provide any additional information by contacting Detective Adam Duffy.
