Mom arrested for newborn baby’s death

HURRICANE, WV – A West Virginia mother faces severe legal repercussions following the tragic death of her 16-day-old infant. Brooke Kessler, 33, from Hurricane, has been charged with the death of a child by a parent or guardian, as reported by multiple media outlets.

The case began unfolding on June 20 when hospital staff alerted state police about potential suspicious injuries observed on the newborn, who was under medical care. According to reports, the tiny victim had suffered extensive traumas, including bruises around her throat, eye, and head, along with severe fractures to her arm and ribs.

Tragically, on June 23, the newborn succumbed to her injuries after being removed from life support. Further investigation led to a distressing confession from Kessler, who allegedly admitted to authorities her actions towards the infant.

According to a criminal complaint, Kessler reportedly became “irritated with the baby” and “probably squeezed” her daughter “too hard” while attempting to burp her. She claimed that the force used was unintentional.

Currently, Kessler is detained in the Western Regional Jail, pending legal proceedings. Details regarding her plea or legal representation remain uncertain.

This heartbreaking incident has stirred significant concern in the community and among child welfare advocates, stressing the importance of supporting at-risk families to prevent such tragedies.
