Venissa Maldonado, a 25-year-old woman from California, has been charged with attempted murder and felony child abuse.
The young mother allegedly dumped her 1-hour-old newborn baby inside of a gas station trash can. After neglecting the child, she fled the scene.
Maldonado was arrested in connection with the discovery of the baby in a bathroom trash can at the gas station on Thursday.
It is unclear where Maldonado gave birth to the infaint. It is also unclear whether she has entered a plea or retained an attorney.
An employee at a gas station found the baby boy inside a bag placed inside a garbage can. After making the disturbing discovery, he called the authorities. As soon as the authorities arrived, they administered life-saving measures to the infant in order to preserve his life.
The baby boy is currently hospitalized after experiencing severe abuse and neglect. He is reportedly in critical but stable condition.
