ORANGE CITY, FL – A startling incident on Interstate 4 left two motorcyclists injured after an unexpected encounter with an alligator. The crash, which occurred over the weekend, added a new twist to the unpredictable nature of Florida highways, which are often characterized by sudden rainstorms and heavy traffic.
Cameron Gilmore, 67, was among those involved in the unusual accident. Recounting the event from his hospital bed, Gilmore described the harrowing moment when he realized he was about to collide with the alligator. “I saw it just ten feet in front of me,” he said. “There was no time to react. I couldn’t even hit the brakes.”
The impact sent Gilmore flying off his motorcycle, flipping over the handlebars and landing on his head. Witnesses reported seeing him roll multiple times across the highway before coming to a stop. Despite sustaining several broken bones and fractures, Gilmore remains optimistic and in good spirits.
Gilmore was riding with a group of fellow motorcyclists, all of whom immediately rushed to his aid after the crash. Dashcam footage from a passing vehicle captured the chaotic scene, showing one person lying in the middle of the road and another off to the side.
Although his injuries are not life-threatening, Gilmore’s determination to ride again is unwavering. “No one wants me to, but I will,” he insisted. “I’m not scared of it. I have another motorcycle and a dirt bike that I share with my son.”
The incident serves as a reminder of the unique challenges that Florida’s roadways can present. While alligators are a common sight in the state, encountering one on a major highway is an extraordinary occurrence.
As Gilmore continues to recover, his story highlights both the resilience of the human spirit and the unpredictable nature of life on the road. For now, he remains focused on healing, with plans to eventually return to his passion for motorcycling.
