Multiple guns confiscated at a high school

NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV – Students in Clark County are gearing up to return to school on Monday, but recent statistics reveal a concerning trend. Midway through the academic year, Clark County School District (CCSD) police have already confiscated 20 firearms from various campuses. Disturbingly, nearly a third of these weapons were discovered at a single North Las Vegas high school.

Legacy High School has been the site of six gun seizures since the school year began in August. Of these, at least four firearms were reportedly linked to students. In one alarming instance, a police report indicated that a confiscated gun belonged to a gang member.

In August, the situation at Legacy High was particularly tense. Within the first few days of school reopening, three guns were found on campus, leaving parents anxious about their children’s safety. “We send our kids to school expecting them to come home safe,” one concerned parent remarked.

On August 16, police discovered two guns in the car of a student and an adult. While the adult faced no charges, the student’s records remain sealed. Just days later, a substitute teacher was arrested for bringing a gun onto the campus. Her case was later dismissed after she completed the terms of her sentencing.

The presence of firearms has raised questions about how students can focus on their education when they are worried about their safety. On October 23, CCSD police confronted a student at the Legacy High library. When asked if he had anything he shouldn’t, the student admitted to possessing a firearm, which he claimed to have stolen from his mother for protection. The student was reportedly affiliated with gang members, though he declined to specify which gang, only noting their representation of the color blue.

The issue isn’t isolated to Legacy High. On December 3 and 6, police also confiscated guns from students at other schools, including Dell H. Robison Middle School and Cheyenne High School, further highlighting the district-wide challenge.

As the community grapples with these incidents, there is an increasing call for enhanced security measures and support systems to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and staff.
