NBA player arrested after he allegedly strangled his former-WNBA girlfriend

NYC, NY- Kevin Porter Jr., a guard for the Houston Rockets, was taken into custody in New York City on Monday following allegations of assault. He was arrested for attacking his girlfriend, Kysre Gondrezick, who is a former player in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). The 23-year-old NBA player faces charges of assault and strangulation.

The incident reportedly took place in the early hours of Monday at the Millennium Hilton near U.N. Plaza, where Porter and Gondrezick were staying. Law enforcement sources indicate that Gondrezick had locked the door due to Porter’s late return from an evening out. After gaining entry with assistance from hotel security, Porter allegedly assaulted Gondrezick.

Gondrezick received medical treatment for a cut on the right side of her face and neck pain. The couple was in New York City attending Fashion Week. They were last seen together at the Vogue Smart Tox NYFW Kickoff event on September 7.

Porter was the 30th pick in the 2019 NBA draft from the University of Southern California, has since emerged as a key player for the Rockets. During the 2022-23 season, he had his best career performance, averaging 19.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game.

Gondrezick, 26, is a former college basketball player for Michigan and West Virginia. She was the fourth overall pick in the 2021 WNBA draft by Indiana. After playing one season for the Fever, she was waived. She has not participated in the last two WNBA seasons and is currently a free agent.

This is not Porter’s first brush with the law. In November 2020, he was arrested in Ohio on a weapons charge. Cleveland Cavaliers, his team at the time, made him inactive for the first half of the season. At the time, a grand jury chose not to indict him. He was later traded to the Houston Rockets in January 2021.
