Officer in critical condition, suspect dead after shooting at QuikTrip store in Kansas

A shooting incident at a QuikTrip in Mission, Kansas, on Sunday morning has resulted in the death of a suspect and left a police officer from Fairway in critical condition. According to authorities, the incident unfolded when officers from the Lenexa Police Department discovered a stolen vehicle at the QuikTrip located at West 95th Street and Interstate 35 at approximately 7:30 a.m.

Upon locating the stolen vehicle, the suspect behind the wheel rammed into a Lenexa police patrol car and fled the scene. A pursuit ensued as officers chased the suspect north on I-35 until reaching Lamar Avenue in Mission. The pursuit culminated when two suspects sought refuge inside the QuikTrip at 4700 Lamar Ave. Law enforcement officers from multiple departments came together at the scene to apprehend the suspects within the convenience store.

As the police attempted to make contact with the suspects, a confrontation erupted. This confrontation led to an exchange of gunfire between the two parties. During the shootout, a male suspect was shot and killed. Tragically, a male officer from the Fairway Police Department was also struck and sustained critical injuries. As of Sunday afternoon, the officer remains hospitalized in critical condition. The authorities have taken a second suspect, an unidentified woman, into custody unharmed. At present, investigators have stated that they are not actively searching for any additional suspects.

The investigation into the shooting incident at QuikTrip is being handled by the Johnson County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Investigation Team (OICIIT). This team includes law enforcement agencies from Lenexa, Fairway, Mission, and the Kansas Highway Patrol. Their investigation into the officer-involved shooting incident is ongoing.
