DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES, CA – One person has died, and seven other individuals were taken to the hospital after a suspected overdose incident occurred in the Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday morning.
The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that the incident transpired around 8:40 a.m. in the facility, which is located on Bauchet Street.
All victims of the incident were inmates of the corrections facility, situated in a holding cell pending transportation to court, according to a spokesperson from the Sheriff’s Department.
Emergency medical procedures were administered to a 32-year-old man, including the administration of Narcan and CPR. Despite these efforts, the individual was pronounced dead at the scene. The official cause of death of the deceased individual will be determined by the L.A. County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The other seven inmates involved, ranging from 18 to 68 years old, were reported to be in stable condition and expected to survive.
Additionally, the L.A. Fire Department’s hazardous materials team was dispatched to decontaminate the affected inmates before their transport to the hospital. The same protocol was followed for anyone else within the facility potentially at risk.
No deputies were reported as injured or having been involved in the incident.
